Who is the East Bay Alliance?

The East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (EBASE) is a nonprofit organization that works throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. We combine research, organizing, and policy advocacy in order to increase economic opportunity for working families. We work with community residents and a broad array of organizations including churches, social service organizations and labor unions. We believe economic development should be used to help meet the pressing needs of communities for jobs, housing and community services.

Although our main website is currently under construction, you can download EBASE reports and studies on working families in the Easy Bay area from the home page.  Go to www.workingeastbay.org.

What is the East Bay Alliance doing in Emeryville?

Over the past five years, EBASE has worked in communities from Hayward to Richmond.  EBASE began work in Emeryville in summer of 2002. We surveyed over 300 Emeryville residents about their opinions on how development was or wasn’t meeting their needs. At that time, we began bringing together groups of residents to talk about how to make development better serve the interests of the community.  As a result of this outreach, we convened a coalition of residents and organizations to win a Community Benefits Agreement for the Pixar expansion project.

Who is part of the coalition for community benefits at Pixar?

The coalition that came together last year is made up of concerned Emeryville residents, including many neighbors of Pixar; the East Bay Housing Organizations, an association of affordable housing builders; Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency, a homeless service and job training agency; the janitors’, food service workers’ and construction unions; and local congregations.  Hundreds of Emeryville residents have sent letters and postcards to the City, attended public hearings, gathered signatures from their neighbors, and signed the referendum petition.  Since Measures T & U were put on the ballot, several other organizations, like the Sierra Club, have endorsed the "No on T & U" campaign.  Click here for the full list of endorsers.
